Hoki CQB
The mood in the NAC APC (Adens van) was of excitement as we arrived at the famous Hokitika CQB arena, with some players having played here before and others seeing the site for the first time. We were shown to our rooms and started loading up for some games later that night. At 7.30 we were briefed to our first game. We had to clear the adjacent building of hostile forces and hold a certain room for 10 mins, of which our team was successful. There were approximately 30 players with there being brutal room to room combat all connected by a hallway spanning the 100 meter long complex. It was a different terrain to what NAC usually competed in but we adapted quickly. The next few games consisted of a brutal hallway force-back and more building clearing type scenarios. Breathers in between rounds were ample opportunity to regale others with acts of bravado and heroics, the first night of “Hoki†was but a taster of what was yet to come…
The next day had a start of 8AM with a hearty breakfast consisting of Bacon, Eggs, Sausages and Toast and afterwards it was straight into the first game of the day. The first game was a competition styled game with Team NAC up first, having to move through a building checking and clearing rooms for targets. We were also informed that there was some gear we needed to collect and a potential hostile with a hostage. We needed to take both alive. We started out pretty strong with our signature team play style working to great effect. We cleared each room methodically, with each member knowing which roles they needed to play, and despite an injury suffered by one of the team, finished the course with an above average time. Unfortunately, due to our missing some targets, setting off three tripwires (one of which was booby-trapped to the hostage) and killing the terrorist, the NAC squad placed forth.
After a bit of down time in which other groups took their turn at the competition shoot, NAC member Zimmer, briefed everyone on the next game planned. Two separate teams had the same objective of blowing up three different sites with a “bomb†(timing device). There was only one bomb, so both teams had to fight it out to take control of the device to deliver to a bomb site. Bomb sites could be destroyed multiple times, with a point awarded per detonation. The same site could not be destroyed twice in a row. Teams consisted of clubs NAC and CSG on one team and DAC, TAG and IAC on the other. It was a savage game with indoor and outdoor skirmishes and battles of attrition, and when it seemed one team was gaining the upper-hand, it would quickly change sides, both teams pushed and pulled and the ebb and flow of the game constantly shifted but after 2.5 hours had past and time was called, the victory went to Team NAC and CSG with a score of 9 to 5.
After an extensive rest and a dinner of sausages and steak, we geared up again for a larger night game utilizing multiple buildings, a forest and a marshy field. Our objectives were to capture as many of the 10 flashing LED lights hidden around the area as we could find, and attempt to capture the enemy’s intel on a laptop at their home base. The teams were the same as the previous game with NAC and CSG working together yet again.
The game started out more of a mad rush to collect as many objectives as possible before the other team, with NAC collecting 5 objectives within the first few minutes without firing a shot. After the objectives were secured at the base, NAC made an attempt on the enemy stronghold but we were out-maneuvered and systematically eliminated. Once we finished re-spawning we were told that a large enemy force was spotted entering the forest in an attempt to flank our base. NAC was sent in to investigate and hopefully eradicate the threat. A search of the forest yielded nothing with no enemies to be found, so we set up a defensive line on the enemies side of the forest. After a time, the guy in charge of the entire team came over the radio, screaming that enemies were assaulting our base and he needed back-up. NAC immediately responded assaulting the enemy from behind, what followed was a long battle to eradicate every enemy player as they had good cover and the night was thick and dark.
After establishing that the base was secure NAC returned to our original position on the edge of the forest and resumed a defensive line. After a bit of a light show from the enemy team, they finally re-assaulted and NAC was able to hold them back at the forests edge. We took the opportunity to push back and made a stealth assault on the enemy base. After some probing one of our squad members infiltrated the building and passed himself off as one of the enemy, casually walking around their base, looking for the laptop, but was unable to access it without giving himself away to a room full of hostiles. Pretty soon afterwards the game was called with the NAC and CSG team winning the game 8-2. A quick game of team deathmatch followed for those who wanted to continue playing and the night finished on a high note after some socialising with the other clubs.
The next day was spent packing up and saying our goodbyes to everyone and the facility, looking forward to the next time we played at the Hokitika CQB.
